Blaqbonez “Back in uni”
Emeka Akumefule, known professionally as Blaqbonez, is a Nigerian rapper and singer signed to Chocolate city.
Blaqbonez is popularly known for his distinct rap style as well as his creative ingenuity. In 2019, he was profiled by The New York Times as one of the new guards of Nigerian music.
These songs “Back in Uni” describe the artist reminiscing on previous romantic relationships, emphasising his irresponsible behaviour and the consequences of his actions. The artist admits to breaking numerous hearts, lying to women, and being unfaithful, particularly to a relationship he had while attending university. He admits his wrongdoings and shows guilt, claiming that only God can protect him from the repercussions of his decisions.
The song also explores themes of devotion betrayal, and regret. The musician appears to be torn between his past activities and the emotional toll they have taken on others, particularly his ex-girlfriend, who is still unaware of his infidelity. Throughout, he expresses resignation as he considers the reality of relationships and his role in them, framed by the notion that his behaviour is simply “how the game goes.”
There’s also a commentary on street law and materialism in which individuals, particularly women, are represented as obsessed with money and status. Despite this, the artist appears to be aware of the harmful effects of this lifestyle on his mental health and well-being, but he continues to indulge in it, eventually asking divine intervention to preserve his soul.
In a funny style, he copies Wizkid in ‘Bad To Me’, Ruger in ‘Girlfriend’, Ayra Starr in ‘Rush’, Asake’s legendary church moment in Bandana, Oxlade’s KULOSA performance, Burna Boy, Portable, BNXN, and skit-maker Cater Efe.
Blackbonez back in uni is a song that passes moral message.
