Meet the Rebel Queen -Yemi Alade

Yemi Eberechi Alade professionally known as Yemi Alade is a Nigerian Singer, songwriter, activist and actress. She was born on March 13, 1989, in Abia State, Nigeria, to Helen Alade (née Uzoma) and James Alade. Her father, a police commissioner, was from Ondo State, while her mother, a businesswoman, hails from Abia State. Yemi is the fifth of seven children, and her family moved frequently due to her father’s job, exposing her to various cultures and languages.

Education:

Yemi Alade attended Victory Grammar School, Lagos, for her secondary education. She later studied Geography at the University of Lagos, graduating in 2010.

Career:

Yemi Alade’s music journey began in 2009 when she won the Peak Talent Show, a reality TV competition. This win brought her more popularity and got her signed to Effyzie Music Group. She released her debut single, “Johnny,” in 2014 as one of the singles in her debut studio Album “King of Queens” in October 2014. The album was nominated as the album of the year in 2015 Nigerian Entertainment Awards.

On 25th March 2016, Yemi Alade released her second studio Album “Mama Africa“. The album disclosed the strengths and weaknesses of an African Woman. The proceedings got from the pre-order sale of the album on iTunes were channelled to the “Feed a Child Charity Initiative”. Mama Africa won the World Beat Album at the 2016 Independent Music Awards.

On 15th December 2017, Yemi released her third studio Album “Black Magic“. A sequel to her 2017 EP “Mama Afrique” the album featured guest appearances like Falz and Olamide.

On 30th August 2019, Yemi Alade released her fourth studio Album “Woman of Steel” She described it as a “buffet with different kinds of meals and drinks”. Woman of Steel is an afrobeat with an infusion of R&B and highlife.
On 20th November 2020, Yemi Alade released her fifth studio Album “Empress” which featured guest appearances such as Rudeboy, Vegedream, Patoranking etc.

Yemi performed “Akwaba” alongside other featured artists for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) opening held in Stade Olympique Alessane Ouattara in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on January 14th, 2024.

Yemi Alade’s sixth studio Album “Rebel Queen” was released on 17th July, 2024 with “Tomorrow” as its lead single.
She has featured in movies like “Omo ghetto: The Saga” produced by the box office queen -Funke Akindele. Also, she’s a United Nations Development Program ambassador on sustainable development goals focusing mainly on inequality, empowering women and creating awareness of the impact of climate change.

Personal Life:

Yemi Alade is known for her energetic live performances, captivating stage presence, and advocacy for women’s rights and African culture. She has been involved in various charity projects, including the #feedachildcharityinitiative. She is single.

Yemi Alade has won numerous awards, including:

-Best artist in West Africa AFRIMA Awards (2015).

-Best World Beat independent music awards (2015).
