Nigerian Afrobeat star Davido recently took to social media to strongly criticize the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its handling of the Edo gubernatorial election, which took place on September 21, 2024.

Davido’s critique primarily focused on delays in the arrival of voting materials, the failure to electronically transmit results, and what he described as a pattern of electoral mismanagement by INEC.

Although Davido is from Osun State, he explained that his interest in the Edo election stems from his personal connection his late mother hailed from Edo State.

His deep frustration with INEC’s actions, however, goes beyond family ties. Having witnessed similar issues during the Osun gubernatorial elections, Davido declared that INEC had not lived up to its promise of transparency and accused it of being “the most dangerous institution in Nigeria.”

In his impassioned posts on X (formerly Twitter), Davido urged Edo residents to protect their votes by closely monitoring the entire electoral process from polling units to collation centers.

He warned of potential electoral manipulation and called for extended voting hours in response to the delays. Davido’s criticisms of INEC echo widespread concerns about the transparency of Nigeria’s electoral processes,

particularly with the lack of electronic transmission of results, which many see as a critical step toward reducing rigging and promoting fair elections.
