“House of Ga’a” An intriguing Tale of Power and Corruption

Published

on

Premiered on July 28, 2024, House of Ga’a is a drama-thriller movie which was directed and produced by the renowned Bolanle Austen-Peters. It has been a heatmap in the Nigeria film industry, after viewing the movie and of course, reading many reviews, I have come up with the overall appraisal.

Synopsis:

Power. Betrayal. Legacy. The legend of Bashorun Ga’a, the man who held the fate of the Oyo empire in his hands, until his own blood altered his destiny.

Theme:

The movie explores the theme of power and corruption, delving into the life of Bashorun Ga’a, a ruthless Prime Minister who stops at nothing to become more powerful than the kings he served. The film sheds light on the dangers of unchecked power and the consequences of corruption.

Technical Aspects:

Set Design: – The set design is meticulous, with attention to detail and a clear commitment to authenticity. The set gave that 18th century feel.

Costume: -The costumes are traditional and accurately reflect the cultural heritage of the Oyo Empire.

Makeup and Special Effects:– The makeup and special effects are well done, with realistic tribal marks and scars.

Soundtrack: – The soundtrack is traditional and complements the movie’s cultural theme.

Performances:

– Femi Branch: – Femi Branch delivers a compelling performance as Bashorun Ga’a, bringing intensity and depth to the role.

– Supporting Cast: – The supporting cast, including Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, and Toyin Abraham, deliver solid performances.

Criticisms:

Predictable Plot: The story is rather clichéd and not at all brain-teasing, and in this context, such a plot is not quite normal.

Lack of Character Development: – The character development is not palpable: they are all more or less flat; some of them are clichéd.

Poor language development: was surprised most of the actors were very poor with their Yoruba, even though one or two of them are Yoruba in the movie.

I recommend “House of Gaa” to fans of Nigerian cinema and those interested in drama-thrillers. While the plot may be predictable, the movie’s technical aspects, performances, and themes make it a gripping watch.

Rating: 5/10

Eternity Official Movie Trailer

Published

on

Eternity Movie Cover

“Eternity” an interesting American Fantasy Romantic film. The premier is set to be in September and will be released in the United States of America in November, is the kind of love you’d see in a triangular form that unfolds in the afterlife.

Plot:

Larry didn’t believe where he saw himself when his afterlife coordinator (Anna) met him, it felt surreal until Joan came into the picture.
Nothing feels surprising, heartbreaking and confusing seeing your two lovers in a place where you didn’t expect – Elizabeth Olsen casting as Joan couldn’t hold back her surprise and mouth agape when she didn’t just meet Larry but was also introduced to her first life lover in the afterlife – Callum Turner casting as Luke.

The scenario showed the tip of what would be happening afterlife now they are in the place, leaving Elizabeth Olsen to choose between Miles Teller(Larry) and Callum Turner(Luke)

The moment left her speechless.

How would she be able to choose between her two lovers who didn’t hurt her in any way?

The time spent was memorable, filled with joy and happiness, argument and fight, it was sparked with romantic scenes, but what was still left on her was “choice.”

Who will she choose to live with till eternity – Luke or Larry?

Cinematography:

The environment for casting is so beautiful, cool and not giving too much by the way.

The tone and sound that accompanied each scene not just suited but also gave sudden expectation and anticipation of “what really would happen here?”

The calm but quite chaotic conversations matched with the scene’s argument, making emotions and odd feelings flow all together.

Each background music matched, high and low to draw what actions came from each love and down scenes.

Characters:

The characters delivered and left no crumbs.

Elizabeth Olsen(Joan) didn’t leave any stone unturned – her shocking moment when Luke came into the picture afterlife, the heated argument with Larry about how death all occurred and them finding themselves all in one place and now, she having to choose one person to spend eternity with is “a lot.”

Her facial expressions in every scene made it stand out and this carried her act along in the trailer to anticipate more of what next will happen and who exactly will she choose.

Not leaving Miles Teller(Larry) and Callum Turner(Luke) behind, the two men who were both in love with Joan, fighting for who will truly spend eternity with her – it displays real love, competition, selfishness, patience and sacrifice. They fought – but who exactly would it be?

There’s also Da’vine Joy casting as Anna who is the afterlife coordinator, came with her A-game of making sure that this decision is worth it and should be examined before it takes place.

Conclusion:

Set to be released in September(the premier) at the Toronto International Film Festival and November, 2025 when the movie will be officially released, Eternity is a must watch.

Elizabeth Olsen brought in her acting in action, as the main character – she killed her role and the trailer showed it.

The trailer – filled with love, competition, suspense, fear and sacrifice.

The look was paired with bold gold jewelries, cream mini hand bag and an open-toe heels.

Liquorose Cowgirl’s Style

Liquorose decided to add a little Western style look to her outfit. The long-sleeve denim jacket was unbuttoned to the midsection and tucked neatly into the matching denim pants. At the waist was a bold belt that had a cow-head buckle. A coat was draped over her shoulders in mixed colours. she carried blue bag, black shoe and topped it all off with a black cowgirl hat.

She completed the outfit with a white low heel complementing the tank top, an oxblood purse. Her accessories were simple- layered necklaces, stud earrings, and a stylish sunglasses.

Chinenye took a slightly different approach that might have been inspired by the weather or simply her personal style. Tokemakinwa Likes It Dramatic

If love glamorous styles, then you should take lessons from Tokemakinwa.

Trailer Review: Highest to Lowest

Published

on

Directed by Spike Lee, “Highest to Lowest” is a crime drama based on a Japanese film, “High and Low” by Akira Kurosawa. Starring Denzel Washington in the lead role, with A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, and Ilfenesh Hadera. Set to be released on August 22, 2024, the trailer teases a story that hints at family, power, tough decisions and responsibility.

Plot
It introduces David King (Denzel Washington), a successful music mogul, married to Pam King (Ilfenesh Hadera) and their teen son Tray King (Aubrey Joseph), a talented basketball player.  David seems to have everything one can wish for — money, power, and authority. But their world is shaken when they receive a devastating news, their son has reportedly been abduct. The twist? The kidnappers have mistaken the driver’s son, Kyle for Tray. Caught in a dilemma, David must choose whether to use his influence and money to help, or turn his back on his driver’s son because it’s not his family who’s at risk.

Denzel Washington

What makes the plot stand out is that David’s conflict of having to choose if he should save his driver’s son, isn’t a simple case of right or wrong— it’s about what people do when they’re not directly affected, and how power shapes a person’s sense of duty. Early in the trailer, a voice-over declares that, “This isn’t about the money. It’s about the principle,” that alone sums up the tension he was going through perfectly. He’s confronting what kind of man he truly is.

Cinematography
The trailer didn’t really reveal much but the visuals are on point, with sharp shots and smooth editing. There’s a lot of movement and action in the scenes that will keep your eyes glued to the screen. Plus, the way they show the characters’ emotions, especially during intense or quiet moments looked real. The darkness of the streets and abduction, builds up suspension. Scenes of flashing lights, the soundtrack, the angle at which the camera was held, and emotions from the characters was really amazing.

Cast and Character’s Chemistry
Denzel Washington as David King was made for this role, he has this aura of quiet dominance — someone who walks into a room and his confidence speaks, no words needed. From the trailer, his performance reveals a man torn between two sides of himself. He looks calm on the outside, but you can tell there’s guilt and pressure building up underneath — and it feels like he’s slowly losing control.

A$AP Rocky

A$AP Rocky, who plays one of the kidnappers, brings an edge that’s both captivating and dangerous. His presence adds tension and excitement to the trailer, there’s this chemistry between him and Denzel thats unpredictable.

Jeffrey Wright, as the father of the kidnapped boy, is very emotional. You can see that he’s hurting, but he doesn’t make a big show of it or act overly dramatic. His pain is quiet — from his eyes, his body language, and the way he pauses while speaking shows the pain and sadness he’s experiencing. Even though he doesn’t have many scenes, those few moments feel powerful.

Ilfenesh Hadera and the rest of the supporting cast play their roles perfectly with the right emotion for each scene. Their performances were intentional, enhancing the narrative without pulling the spotlight away from the main storyline.

Our Review
Highest to Lowest looks like it’s more than a flashy thriller. It’s thoughtful, intense, and there are lots of lessons to learn— It poses a question that stays with you: what would you do if the life on the line wasn’t your own?

In the midst of having to deal with family, guilt, power, and the consequences of choices. What action would you take with all the pressure or would you rather abandon everything and move on because it doesn’t affect you.
